The Leeds Mercury of 26/01/1884 reported on this match, saying that this was the largest “single-handed” match ever contested by Leeds Chess Club to date. The Midland Railway Institute in Derby was in the habit of taking on strong clubs within their geographical reach, and numbered among their players a number of strong Derbyshire players from outside Derby itself.
