1884: Bradford v Halifax |

Played at the Exchange Café, Bradford, on Saturday, 01/11/1884, over 7 boards.
This match was reported both in the Halifax Guardian of 08/11/1884, and in the Leeds Mercury Weekly Supplement of 08/11/1884. The two reports differed as to which player was playing for Bradford on board 3.
On only one board were two games played, but presumably this match was played on the “2 games per board (time permitting)” basis.
(c) = captain * The Halifax Guardian gave “S. Hudson” and the Leeds Mercury gave “T. Fieldsend”. ** The Halifax Guardian gave “S. M. Cockin” and the Leeds Mercury gave “S. Cockin”. *** The Leeds Mercury gave “T. E. Hall” and the Halifax Guardian gave “J. E. Hall”.
Given that the Leeds Mercury report will almost certainly be based on one received from Bradford of Halifax, or culled from the Bradford or Halifax press, then it is slightly more likely to have suffered an error during transcription. Also, S. Hudson seems to fit better than T. Fieldsend at board three of this Bradford tram. For these reason “S. Hudson” is here assumed to be more probably the correct version.
