The De Grey Rooms on the east side of the north end of St. Leonard’s Place, York, were used for the chess meetings organised in York by the Rev. Arthur Bolland Skipworth:

the North Yorkshire & Durham Chess Association meeting of 1867,

Skipworth’s Yorkshire Chess Association’s meeting of 1868, and

Skipworth’s Yorkshire Chess Association’s meeting of 1869.

Its location was highly convenient for Skipworth’s right-hand man in York, namely Alfred Ball, who lived at 6 St. Leonard’s Place.
