Alfred Ball, MRCS, was in general practice in York for decades.
He was born in 1825/26 (or possibly 1827) in London, more specifically Stepney (1861 census) or Bow (1881 census).
By 1857 he had married Henrietta M. Whittley, who had been born in 1824/25, at Swaffham, Norfolk. The couple had at least two children:
White’s 1858 York directory listed Alfred Ball, surgeon, at 30 St. Saviourgate, York.
The 1861 census found the parents and two children living in York, and Alfred’s mother-in-law, Maria Whittley, living with them. The Post Office Directory for the City of York, 1861, listed Alfred at 30 St. Saviourgate, York.
At some time from 1861 to 1871, his wife, Henrietta died.
The Post Office Directory for West Riding and York, 1867, listed him at 6 St. Leonard’s Place, York, which is where the 1871 census found widower Alfred living with son Alfred, and three servants. Daughter Emma isn’t mentioned at her father’s home, so maybe she was away, visiting. (Click here for a photograph etc. of 6 St. Leonard’s Place.)
Chess Weekly of 1869, p.188, said regarding the coming York meeting, “A programme with full particulars of the proposed assembly may be had on application to A. Ball, Esq., the Hon. Secretary, St. Leonard’s, York.”
The1881 census found Alfred with daughter Emma, and three servants.
At some time from 1881 to 1891, he re-married to Lucy A [surname?] (born 1856/57, at York). The 1891 census found Alfred and Emma, with three servants, living at Mill Crooks, Huntington, roughly three miles to the north of the centre of York.
The apparent absence of a 1901 census entry suggests he died at some from 1891 to 1901.
