44th Chess Olympiad

(See also results here.)

The 44th Olympiad is scheduled to take place from 28th July to 10th August, 2022, at Chennai (formerly Madras), India.  The first round is to be on 29/07/2022.  The event was originally to be held in Russia, but as a consequence of events in Ukraine, FIDE switched the venue, with the All India Chess Federation landing the privilege of hosting the premier event in the world chess calendar - yes, more important than the World Individual Championship many would say, in view of outreach and inclusion!

FIDE has announced a list of entrants including 188 Open (usually equates to “men’s”) teams, and 162 women’s teams (at time of writing).  These have helpfully been listed in order of average rating of the players in the team, and the USA, India and Norway teams head the Open list, in that order, while India, Ukraine and Georgia head the Women’s list.  So, home-country India will have high hopes of medals.  (Full lists in panel on left.)

Russia is of course absent, and there is no “FIDE” team filled with Russian players who have switched allegiance.  Also conspicuous by its absence is China, which fact will be due to Sino-Russian political considerations and will be sad news for the rank-and-file (!) chess-players of China.

On the home front, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Jersey and Guernsey are all represented, though Guernsey has no women’s team which is hardly surprising.  The Isle of Man is absent.  Rankings at the time of writing (they change as ratings of team members change) of these teams are as follows:

Some names of lower-ranked teams in the lists of entrants are perhaps better recognisable to those who collected stamps in their youth.  Thus, amongst the lowest-ranked Open teams is that of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Once again, there are teams from both the British Virgin Islands (ranked 180th) and the US Virgin Islands (ranked 174th), who have been diametrically opposed on chess-political issues in the past, and will doubtless each be trying to outdo the other in the final points table.

Rupert Jones’s native Papua New Guinea is initially ranked 166th.

The name most likely to stump even the former philatelist is “Eswatini”, which is the Swazi name for what in British Colonial days was known as “Swaziland”, the renaming on 19/04/2018 having been to mark the 50th anniversary of independence.  This team is initially ranked 165th.

Incidentally, the European Chess Union caters for small nations, and a European Small Nations Individual Chess Championship is contested among representatives of min-nations such as Andorra, Cyprus, Faroe Islands, Guernsey, Jersey, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco and San Marino.  The 4th ESNA Championship, played over 9 rounds, runs from 24/09/2022 to 02/10/2022, and is being held at the Vadozner Huus, Vaduzin, in the Principality of Liechtenstein.  (See https://www.schach.li/esna/4th-esna-european-small-nations.html/430/l/de)
