FIDE Online (Rapidplay) Olympiad
2021
20th August to 15th September, 2021
The FIDE Online Olympiad 2021, for 6-board teams, played with a
time-control of 15 minutes + 5 seconds increment per move, (though
“Rapidplay” does not appear in the title) attracted 153. Teams are of
mixed gender and age, the required composition being
at
least 2 women (age 20 or over),
at least 1 player U‑20 (born in 2001 or later),
at
least 1 girl U-20 (born in 2001 or later).
|
That
limits the number of adult male players in a team to a maximum of 2.
Teams were allowed to have reserves, and could to draw on pools of up to 12
pre-named players. In practice teams usually (always?) had men on top
two boars, women on the next two, then a boy, then a girl on bottom
board. (England followed that formula throughout.)
Participating
teams were seeded and allocated to 4 Divisions, Division 1 (or “Top
Division”) being the highest. Each Division’s matches were then played
one after another, starting with Division4, then Division3, then Division 2
and then Division1, with the provision that a number of teams from each
division qualify for the next higher division. Thus the lowest seeded
team could in theory rise through the ranks and win Division1!
Division
4 matches were played from 20th to 22nd August, with 60 teams playing in 5
all-play-all pools of 12 teams, with the top 3 teams from each pool
proceeding to Division 3.
Division
3 matches were played 27th to 29th August, with the 35 seeds and the 15
qualifiers from Division4 playing in 5 all-play-all pools of 10 teams, with
the top 3 teams from each pool proceeding to Division 2.
Division
2 matches were played 2nd to 4th September, with 35 seeds and the 15
qualifiers from Division 3 playing in 5 all-play-all pools of 10 teams, with
the top 3 teams from each pool proceeding to Division1.
Division
1 was played 8th to 10th September, with 25 seeds and the 15 qualifiers from
Division 2 playing in 4 all-play-all pools of 10 teams, with the top 2 teams
from each pool proceeding to a knock-out stage (¼-finals on 13/09/2021,
½-finals on 14/09/2021, and final on 15/9/2021).
Division
1 was where England entered the fray, as one of the 25 seeded teams in Division
1, where they were in Pool 4 with USA, Poland, Canada, Peru, Netherlands,
Cuba, Brazil, Colombia and Turkey.
England’s
pool was as follows:
