|
George Stopford Taylor was born in 1830/31 in Sheffield, a son of John Stopford Taylor, surgeon, who in White’s directory of 1833 had addresses at 28 Haymarket and 9 Rock Street.
White’s directory of 1852 listed George Stopford Taylor at 18 Norfolk Street.
George Stopford Taylor appears in White’s directories of 1856 and 1862 as a surgeon working with John Stopford Taylor & Son; h. 85 Norfolk Street.
John Stopford Taylor died 2 Apr 1866 (obit. Sheffield Telegraph).
On 22nd May 1867 36-year-old George married 24-year-old Clara Baxby (born 1842/43), at York.
White’s directory of 1879 lists him as a surgeon at 74 Norfolk Road, with “MRCS, LSA, and LMRCS” after his name. He was listed as working with Edmund Hargreaves as Taylor and Hargreaves, surgeons working at 2 Eyre Street, which was also Edmund Hargreaves’s home address.
In 1881 he worked as a medical and surgical practitioner, and lived at 74 Norfolk Row, Sheffield. He was recorded in the census as married (not widowed), though his wife is not listed in the 1881 at that address. He employed two domestic servants.
Death
George Stopford Taylor died 7 Jan 1892 (obit. in Sheffield Telegraph).
Chess
George Stopford Taylor was a member of the Sheffield Athenaeum Chess Club from about 1855 to 1868, being president of the club for the four years 1865 to 1868. He attended the West Yorkshire Chess Association Meetings at Huddersfield in 1864, and at Sheffield in 1868.
When an international chess event was organised to take place in Dublin in September and October 1865, “Geo. S. Taylor, Esq., President Sheffield Chess Club” (meaning Sheffield Athenaeum Chess Club) was listed as one of the 33 members of the “Co-operative committee”.
A “G. H. Taylor”, allegedly from Sheffield, is recorded as attending the WYCA meeting at Leeds in 1866. This may have been George S Taylor of Sheffield, but may have been G. H. Taylor then of Houghten-le-Spring, Co. Durham, previously of Huddersfield.
