Four Wakefield-born members of the Staynes family played chess in Yorkshire over the period around 1885 to 1925 and probably beyond.  These were Joe Staynes, his younger brother George Ellis Staynes, and two of George’s sons, Thomas Arthur Staynes and Wilfred Staynes.  All played in the Woodhouse Cup for one or more of Wakefield, Huddersfield and Bradford,

Non-Chess Life

His early life is outlined in the entry for his father, George Ellis Staynes.

He emigrated to Canada, sailing to Quebec in 1928.  He married Marion Fisher Watson (born 14/11/1906, presumably in Canada), seemingly in Canada.

Chess

W Staynes played for Bradford in the Woodhouse Cup in 1924-25, and presumably before and/or after that season.

Death

Wilfred Staynes died on 10/03/1981, and was buried at Victoria Lawn Cemetery, St Catharine’s, Niagara Regional Municipality, Ontario, Canada.

His wife died on 27/01/2003, and was interred with him.
