Non-Chess Life

George Edmund Mallett’s parents were John Mallett (born 1829/30, London) and Emma Elizabeth Mallet (born 1831/32, Bury St. Edmunds).  This couple had at least two children, both born in Ipswich, Suffolk:

Lizzie Isabella Mallett

born 1857/58

George Edmund Mallett

born 1862

History, Gazetteer & Directory of Suffolk, 1855, listed John Mallett at Sekforde Street, Woodbridge, under painters, plumbers and glaziers.

George’s ages in censuses imply he was born in 1862 or 1863, but the birth was registered at Ipswich in the third quarter of 1862, hence he was born in 1862.

Post Office Directory of Cambs, Norfolk & Suffolk, 1869, listed Mr. John Mallett, 122 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich.  It listed seven newspapers under Ipswich, without naming any of the staff.

The 1871 census found parents John and Elizabeth, the two children, and John Mallet’s parents, William Mallett (born 1802/03, Blundeston, Suffolk) and Elizabeth Mallett (born 1798/99, Bungay, Suffolk), living at 122 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich, Suffolk.  John Mallett was a journalist.

The 1881 census found parents John and Elizabeth and the two children, now without John’s parents, but with one servant, still living at 122 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich.  John Mallett was now described as an editor.  18-year-old George was a reporter, perhaps working on the same newspaper as his father.  23-year-old Lizzie was a “professor of music” (which often meant nothing grander than that the person was a piano teacher).

The marriage of George Edmund Mallett to Minnie Gertrude Finer (born 1865/66, Kirby-le-Soken, Essex) was registered in the third quarter of 1888 at Tendring, Essex.  The couple had at least the following two children:

John W. Mallett

born 1889/90, Nottingham

Cecil F. Mallett

born Dec/Jan, 1890/91, Bradford

The places of birth of the children suggest George Edmund Mallett moved around with his job.

White’s History, Gazetteer & Directory of Nottinghamshire, 1885, seems not to have listed George Edmund Mallett, but his family presumably lived in Nottingham in 1889 or 1890.

The 1891 census found George, Minnie, 1-year-old John, 3-month-old Cecil, and one servant, living at 6 White’s Lane [Terrace?], Manningham, Bradford. George was a journalist.  White’s History, Gazetteer & Directory of Suffolk, 1891-2, listed John Mallett, journalist, at 149 Woodbridge Road.

Byles’s Post Office Bradford Directory, 1891, listed George E. Mallett, journalist, at 6 White’s Terrace.  (4 White’s Terrace was occupied by Thomas Bunting Brown, grocer.)

At some time from 1891 to 1898 the family moved from number 6 to number 4 White’sTerrace.

Byles’s Post Office Bradford Directory, 1898, listed George E. Mallett, journalist, at 4 White’s Terrace.  (6 White’s Terrace was occupied by Samuel L. Gostick, coal merchant.)

The 1901 census found the family of four, now without a servant, living at 4 White’s Terrace, Bradford.  George was still a journalist.

Kelly’s Bradford Directory, 1901, listed George Edmund Mallett at 4 White’s Terrace, Bradford.

Death

George Edmund Mallett of 4 White’s Terrace, Manningham, Bradford, died 23/11/1907, aged 45.  Administration of his estate was granted to Minnie Gertrude Mallett, widow.  He left effects of £786 8s.

Chess

“G. E. Mallett” of Bradford attended the 1884 meeting of the West Yorkshire Chess Association.

He played in the 1884 Lancashire-Yorkshire match.

He played for Bradford in the Woodhouse Cup from 1885-86 (possibly also 1884-85).
