Whitby Beef Fund |

The Whitby Beef Fund was a charitable institution which arranged for the collection of monetary donations from those likely to be eating goose at Christmas, to facilitate the distribution of beef, and in some cases vegetables etc as well, free of charge to the deserving poor. Recipients needed to apply, and it appears some recommendation from an appropriate person cognisant of the applicant’s circumstances was involved. Matters were run by the Whitby Beef Fund Committee, of which Walter Grimshaw took over as chairman from James Maule upon the latter’s death in 1883.
The Whitby Gazette of Saturday 19/12/1885 (page 4, column 4) contained an article which included the following extracts the which well illustrate the workings of the fund:
CHRISTMAS BEEF FUND FOR THE POOR. – At a well attended meeting of the Christmas Beef Fund Committee, held at the Crown Hotel on Wednesday evening, Mr. Walter Grimshaw, the president, in the chair, the various canvassers for subscriptions handed in their money. It was reported that the public had subscribed as generously and as readily as ever, all apparently appreciating the urgent call of the poor classes of the town for aid and assistance at this time of the year. . . .
On no previous occasion have there been so many appeals to the charity of this fund, as shown by the fact that there are 950 persons representing families of children more or less large and impoverished, who have placed their names on the list of applicants, and have been recommended by ladies and gentlemen well knowing their necessitous condition. . . .
[Less needy applicants had to be excluded from the final list of recipient.]
Nearly every local industry is represented among the applicants. The majority were fisherman, jet workers, mechanics out of employment, and agricultural and iron-yard labourers without work. There are also a large number of widows. . . .
[“220 stones of good beef” would be cut into “nice joints of 3½ lb each, as free from bone as possible”.]
Those applicants with large families will, in addition, be supplied with half a stone of good flour, together with a few potatoes, turnips or carrots. The distribution will take place on the Shambles on Wednesday next [23rd] commencing at 3 o’clock in the afternoon.
Acknowledgements of donations to the fund were printed in the Whitby Gazette.
The funds audited accounts for Christmas 1899, as published in the Whitby Gazette, of 16th May, 1890, were as follows:
