Non-Chess Life

The parents of James Lilley Bisbey were William Bisbey (born 1811/12, Norton) and Mary Bisbey (born 1816/17, Norton).  This couple had at least the following six children:

James Lilley Bisbey

born 1837/38, Norton

Joseph H Bisbey

born 1839/40, Norton

Sarah A Bisbey

born 1841/42, Norton

Elizabeth Bisbey

born 1844/45, Norton

Jane Bisbey

born 1847/48, Huddersfield

Ruth A Bisbey

born Jun/Jul 1850, Huddersfield

James Lilley Bisbey was born at Norton in the then parish of Campsall, about 7 miles north of Doncaster, the birth being registered in the first quarter of 1838 at Doncaster.  He was baptised at St. Mary Magdalene's, Campsall, on 22/01/1838.

The 1841 census found the Bisbey family living at Norton, Campsall.

The family moved to Huddersfield around 1846, give or take a year or two.  The 1851 census thus found family living at Water Lane, Hudersfield.  Father William was a lawyer.  James was a tailor’s apprentice, Joseph was a railway porter, and Elizabeth was a scholar.

On 03/01/1858, at St. Mary the Virgin, Badsworth, tailor James Lilley Bisbey, batchelor of full age, resident at Thorp Audlin, son of William Bisbey, lawyer, married Martha Hirst (born 1837/38, Thorp Audlin, in the parish of Badsworth), spinster of full age, resident at Ackworth, daughter of Thomas Hirst, labourer.  The marriage was conducted by William Jepson Newman, and was registered at Hemsworth.

James and Martha moved to Leeds, and James became a tailor in his own right.

The 1861 census found James and Martha living at 33 Salop Street, Leeds.  James was a tailor.

White’s Directory of Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield &c, 1866, seems not to list any Bisbeys, suggesting our man was in the employment of another, rather than having his own business.

White's Directory of Leeds & the West Riding, 1870, listed James L. Bisbey as a tailor at 19 Grattan Street, Leeds.

The 1871 census found the James and Martha living at Burley Street, Leeds.  James was still a tailor.

James Bisbey is elusive in the 1881 census.  Also, Kelly's Directory of West Riding of Yorkshire, 1881, seems not to list him anywhere, though he appears to have been somewhere in Leeds.  (In Grattan Street, only number 25 was listed; in Craven Terrace, Leeds, no evens were listed between 22 and 34.)

Kelly's Directory of Leeds, 1888, listed James Lilley Bisbey as a tailor and habit maker trading at 37 Park Row, Leeds (with name in capitals in the alphabetic commercial list, which must have cost extra), and residing at 30 Craven Terrace, Carlton Hill, Leeds.

The 1891 census found James and Martha living at 30 Craven Terrace, Leeds.  James was still a tailor.

White's Directory of Leeds & the Clothing District, 1894, listed James Lilley Bisbey as a tailor trading at 37 Park Row, Leeds, and residing at 30 Craven Terrace, Carlton Hill, Leeds.

Kelly’s 1893 Leeds Directory also listed James Lilley Bisbey as a tailor at 37 Park Road, Leeds.

Death

James Lilley Bisbey of Craven Terrace, Leeds, tailor, died on 17/08/1900 at 61 Woodland Lane, Chapel Allerton, Leeds.  Probate was granted to his widow, Martha Bisbey.  He left £1,304 1s. 1d.

Chess

J. L. Bisbey of Leeds attended the annual meetings of the West Yorkshire Chess Association of 1877, 1878, 1882, 1884, 1887, 1888 and 1889.

He played board 1 for the Over-35s in the 1883 Under-35s v Over-35s in Bradford.
