Herman Ammelburg was a German national who emigrated to England, taking up residence in Bradford, becoming active on Bradford and Yorkshire chess scenes.

Private Life

English census and death records tell us that Herman he was born in 1827, in Frankfurt, Germany.  German records reveal that he was one of at least three sons born to Johann Jacob Ammelberg and Johanna Betty Lattmann, all baptised at Frankfurt am Main, Germany:

Johann Gerhard Julius Ammelburg,

b. 16/06/1822,

bapt. 07/07/1822,

Johann Philipp Anton Ammelburg,

b. 10/10/1823,

bapt. 02/11/1823,

Johann Hermann Ammelburg,

b. 14/04/1827,

bapt. 06/05/1827.

Twenty-one-year-old Johann Hermann Ammelburg left Ostend, Belgium, on the Triton, travelling under the name “Herman Ammelburg”.  He arrived at London on 3rd February 1849, and on the Port of London Certificate of Arrival he signed his name as “Herm. Ammelburg”.  His profession was given as that of “merchant”.

Presumably the three sons were known by their second names, Gerhard, Philipp and Hermann respectively.  Once in England, our man seems to have stuck to “Herman Ammelburg”, without the Johann and with only one “n”.

He is not obviously present in the England 1851 census, so it’s possible he went home to Germany, to return to England at a later date.  He was active in Bradford Chess by 1858.

White’s directory of Bradford &c. for 1861 lists him as a “manager” resident at North Park Road, in the Manningham area of Bradford.

The 1861 census recorded 33-year-old unmarried Herman as a boarder at 7 North Park Road, Bradford, in the Manningham area of Bradford, working as a commercial clerk for a worsted yarn trader.

Death

The German records of Johann Hermann Ammelburg say he died on 30th October 1868.

The Chess Players’ Quarterly Chronicle, 1868-69, page 129, recorded him death as follows:

We are sorry to have to record the death of Mr. Ammelburgh, the Vice-President of the Bradford Chess Club, and a member of the General Committee of the Yorkshire Chess Association.  He died in the very prime of life, and his loss is greatly deplored by all chess players and friends with whom he was associated.

Chess

He attended the meetings of the West Yorkshire Chess Association of 1858 to 1862, 1864, 1867 & 1868.  He was Vice-President of Bradford chess club and a subscriber to Skipworth’s Yorkshire Chess Association in 1868.
