Wakefield v Huddersfield Correspondence Game, before 1844 |
In Chess Studies, a collection of games produced by George Walker in 1844, there appears a game played by correspondence between the Wakefield and Huddersfield chess clubs. No detail is given, not even the date; chess publications in those days were often severely short of details such as when and where games were played, and players’ names were often deemed too unimportant to record.
The present Huddersfield chess club dates back to 1852. This Huddersfield Chess Club was a predecessor which fizzled out. It predated the era of John Watkinson and Walter Parratt.
The Wakefield consulting team, or “committee”, is likely to have included one or more from Edward Shepherd, William Ledgar Robinson, Rev. Edwin Colman Tyson and John Morrell France. The leading player on the Huddersfield team is likely to have been Thomas Parratt, father of Walter Parratt. Walker offers no guidance on such matters.
