1910: F D Yates v G Shories

Narrative

In 1910, Bradford Chess Club arranged a match between their up-and-coming member Fred Dewhirst Yates and George Shories who was at the time resident in Bradford. The match was to be for the best of 7 games, with draws counting. If after 7 games the scores were equal, then a further two games were to be played; thereafter if there were still a tie, then prizes would be divided equally. Games were to be played at Bradford Chess Club. The first game was to be played on Friday 22/04/1910, with subsequent games played on each following Tuesday and Friday to the end. The playing sessions were to run from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., presumably with adjourned games being resumed the next day The rate of play was to be 20 moves per hour. As things turned out, Yates won the first four games, whereupon the match was terminated as Yates had reached a winning score.
