HUDDERSFIELD CLUB.
---------------
On Saturday
night [18/09/1909] the season 1909-10 was opened with the President’s
tea, at Robinson’s Cafe, John Street, when there was a capital attendance.
Mr. Leonard Denham,
the President, occupied the chair and stated that the programme for the
ensuing season was a strong one and the hope was expressed that
Huddersfield might be victorious in the Woodhouse Cup for which the Huddersfield
club had entered. After tea the number present was increased and Mr. H. E. Atkins, the ex-amateur
British Champion, who is resident in Huddersfield, gave an illustrative
analysis of the Ruy Lopez opening by means of a large board with pieces
that could be moved a will. The Ruy Lopez analysis proved very
interesting and various variations were worked with great clearness and
great profit to the players who will be much stronger by reason of Mr.
Atkins’ services when they meet opponents who play this
opening. He counselled the members to study book play by the masters
as well as engage in practice over the board, and endeavour to make
themselves fully acquainted with the reason for various moves in the variations.
His conversational comments on the openings were especially enjoyed.
The President expressed the thanks of the members. Afterwards a match
was played between teams selected by the President and the captain. The
following was the score:- President’s team, 7; captain’s, 8.
