The Yorkshire
Herald and York Herald of Monday 23rd January, 1894, on page 8, column 3,
reported on this match as follows:
CHESS
HARROGATE v EBOR (YORK)
The return
match between Ebor (York) and Harrogate clubs took place at the new
quarters of the Ebor club, the North Eastern Hotel, York, and resulted in a
complete victory for the Eborites by 14½ to 5½ games. A
capital tea was placed on the tables by the host, Mr. F. W. Halliwell,
whose catering gave complete satisfaction to all present. Mr.
Councillor C. S. Meyer expressed the thanks of the thanks of the Harrogate
players to the members of the Ebor club for the manner in which they had
entertained them, and expressed in humorous terms the hope that the York
Club would again visit their town, on which occasion an effort would be
made to return the compliment. Mr. J. H. Jolly, on behalf of the York
Club responded, and wished the visitors every success. The
arrangements were ably carried out by the secretary, Mr. E. S. Thorp.
