This match, described by the Sheffield & Rotherham Independent Weekly Supplement of 07/03/1885 as a “friendly” match, and although it was not stated to be so, the Wakefield team was clearly in the nature of a Wakefield second team, as it contained none of the club’s top players. The score line suggests Wakefield may have underestimated Barnsley.
