Sheffield Sub-Site

Played at the Church Institute, Wakefield,

on the evening of Thursday, 05/03/1885,

over 8 boards, 2 games per board (time permitting).

This match, described by the Sheffield & Rotherham Independent Weekly Supplement of 07/03/1885 as a “friendly” match, and although it was not stated to be so, the Wakefield team was clearly in the nature of a Wakefield second team, as it contained none of the club’s top players.  The score line suggests Wakefield may have underestimated Barnsley.
