on the evening of Thursday, 20/03/1884,

over 10 boards, 2 games per board (time permitting).

 

Both Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees were in the North Riding of Yorkshire prior to local government reorganisation in 1974, when they became part of the present-day Cleveland County.  The two clubs were founding members of the Tees Side Chess Association, which was formed on 17/10/1883, and has now evolved into the Cleveland Chess .Association.

 

The Leeds Mercury of 29/03/1884 reported the results in this match as follows:

The Mercury mentioned that the Middlesbrough board 3 was the former Leeds player, D. Fawcett.  This D. Fawcett drew with Blackburne in a simultaneous display (see 1882 November: Blackburne in Leeds).
