THE
FIRST MEETING
took place at Leeds on the 18th of
January, 1841, and met with all the success that was anticipated. It was
presided over by J. Milnes Gaskell, Esq., MP., and was attended by players from
all parts of the county [just the West Riding, in actual fact]. Among the
visitors were Messrs. Mongredien and Schwabe from Liverpool. The railway
between Manchester and Leeds was not then in existence, and these gentlemen
had to post through the snow a distance of about forty-five miles in order
to be present. Among the games were several between Messrs. Mongredien and
Rhodes, and Mongredien and Cadman. At the dinner which wound up the day's
proceedings, the president made an excellent speech, all present expressed
themselves delighted with the novelty, and it was resolved with enthusiasm
that the meetings should be periodical, and that the next gathering should
take place on November the 8th, in the same year, at Wakefield.
