Although the
British Chess Federation was formed in 1904, primarily by the
“federation” of the regional county chess unions, it was not
until 1908 that a counties championship was established. Yorkshire
has won it five times so far: 1921, 1974, 1982, 2000, 2009, 2014, 2015 and
2016.
Winners hold for
one year the Löwenthal Cup,
which was presented to the BCF in 1922, but was engraved with earlier winners
from 1908 to1821.
