8 Crown Terrace, Scarborough was for some time the residence of the Rev. William Thorold and his sister Eliza Mary Thorold.  19 Crown Terrace was also given as William’s address in one directory.  Was this a mistake, or had the Thorolds occupied no. 19 while no. 8 was being redecorated?

19 Crown Terrace (seen from Crown Crescent)

Crown Terrace, Scarborough, is a terrace of nineteen 4-storey terrace properties built on sloping ground, facing toward the north-east.  The individual properties are numbered sequentially 1 to 19, i.e. not in steps of two, from left to right.  Each property has a narrow front, but is quite deep.  Numbers 3 to 18 are largely alike, having steps at the right leading to a first-floor from door, with access beneath the steps to the ground floor or basement.  Numbers 1 and 2 differ in having the front door at ground level.  Number 19, at the end, has its front door at ground level in the side of the terrace, accessed from Crown Crescent.

The properties have no front garden, but on the other side of the road which runs along the front of the terrace, is a grassy bank sloping downwards, away from the terrace, with trees growing in it.
