15 Great
Stanhope Street was the first residence in Bath of Edmund Thorold. If was
bombed during the war (see Edmund
Thorold’s Residences in Bath). Above is how the north west
end of Great Stanhope Street looks now. The front door of number 15
would have been roughly in the position of the fifth window from the left,
after the curved corner, and just to the left of the first door from the
left in the picture, which is that of the modern number 7. The first
three doors from the left (modern numbers 7, 6 and 5) have a building line
slightly set back from that of the original 1 to 4 in the distance.
There is section even further back, containing an archway, between 5 and 6.

The
watchman’s sentry box is situated behind the position of the
photographer for the topmost picture. Edmund Thorold would see it to
his right as he emerged from his front door. According to the plaque
on its door, it dates from about 1810, is a Grade II listed building, and
was restored in 2012.
