Bradford Observer Challenge Trophy, the second |
|
When the first Bradford Observer Challenge Trophy was won outright by Dewsbury in 1889-90, that trophy’s donor, Messrs. William Byles and Sons of Bradford, supplied a replacement trophy for the “minor” club competition. It took the form of a silver rook manufactured by Messrs. Fattorini and Sons of Bradford.
At the 1891 annual meeting of the West Yorkshire Chess Association, when presenting the new trophy to Dewsbury for their 1890-91 victory, Mr. William Pollard Byles pointed out that there was meaning in the selection of a rook instead of a king or queen. It was not a major trophy, but was intended as an incentive to the minor clubs to become, in time, rivals to the major clubs.
