Non-Chess Life

 

Edward Joshua Waterfall was born to William Waterfall, a cashier, and his wife Mary Ann Waterfall, and was baptised on 02/10/1840 by J Gibson.

 

White’s Sheffield directory of 1862 listed a William Waterfall as manager of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Banking Company at 17 ChurchStreet, with his home at Greystones, and another William Waterfall as an agent living at 5 St James Street.

 

Death

 

Edward Joshua Waterfall died in 1892, in Sheffield, aged 51 years.  A death notice appeared in the Sheffield & Rotherham Independent of Saturday 13/08/1892, p. 6.

 

Chess

 

Edward Joshua Waterfall of Sheffield Athenaeum Chess Club attended the annual meetings of the West Yorkshire Chess Association in 1868, 1875 and 1880.

 

He represented The Sheffield Athenaeum against St. Peter’s on 13/02/1877 (board 4), in the annual matches versus the rest of the Sheffield & District Chess Association in 1883 (board 28), 1885 (board 17), 30/04/1887 (board 9), 18/12/1887 (board 15) and 1888.
