The Sheffield & Rotherham Independent of 25/01/1850 reported on Sheffield Athenaeum & Mechanics Institute Chess Club’s second annual meeting, calling it “recent”, without giving a date.
Membership stood at 40, which was actually 16 less than reported at the previous annual meeting. Perhaps some of the original 56 were over enthusiastically joining the new club which proved less to their liking than expected.
There had been a perceptible improvement in the standard of play.
The accounts were satisfactory.
