The Sheffield
& Rotherham Independent of 08/06/1850 reported on this
“soirée” of the Sheffield
Athenaeum and Mechanics Institution Chess Club, held on Wednesday
29/05/1850, as follows:
|
CHESS CLUB.
– The chess club of the Athenaeum and Mechanics institution supped
together in the new smoke room of the establishment on Wednesday week,
under the presidency of Mr. J. G. Robson, to congratulate each other om the
very superior manner in which they found themselves accommodated. The
room is very commodious and filled up in a neat and appropriate
manner. The evening was very agreeably spent. Messrs. Flint,
Ellis, and Walker contributed to the general hilarity by singing several
glees, airs, &c. There is reason to anticipate for this chess
club a great degree of success.

None of those
named are easily identifiable, apart from the president, John George Robson.
