The Sheffield & Rotherham Independent of 12/01/1850 reported Sheffield Athenaeum & Mechanics Institute Chess Club’s annual meeting.

 

The club had 54 members, and subscription had more than covered expenses.  Thanks were extended to the (outgoing) president and secretary, namely Mr. Murray and Mr. Padley respectively.

It is evident that a number of players switched from the Sheffield Athenaeum Chess Club to the Sheffield Athenaeum & Mechanics Institute Chess Club in 1850, and some went back to the Sheffield Athenaeum Chess Club in 1851 or 1852.
