Identity of the Chess-Player
“R. C. Thorp” occurred regularly in match results involving Leeds. It is apparent, in the absence of other candidates, that the identity of this player was Ronald Charles Osborn Thorp, and that he routinely suppressed his third initial, which stood for his mother’s maiden name.
Non-Chess Life
Ronald Charles Osborn Thorp was a son of Windsor Thorp (born 1850, Leeds) and Frances Elizabeth Thorp (née Osborn, 1851,York ), who married on 29 May 1874, at York, and had at least the following children:
Windsor Thorp’s father, John Thorp Hall had been a builder; Windsor followed in his footsteps, but branched out a little.
Tracing the family in Garforth is difficult, but by 1891, when the family lived in Reginald Terrace, Leeds, he was a building contractor, and fire assurance assessor.
In 1901, when the family was still living at Reginald Terrace, Windsor was a fire-loss assessor and valuer, while 22-year-old Ronald was an assistant fire-loss assessor.
In 1911, Ronald was an insurance corporation inspector (which might mean the same as before). He was still living with his parents.
In 1915, Windsor Thorp died at Scarborough.
In 1925, Ronald C O Thorp married Norah Kitchen at or in the vicinity of Tadcaster. Norah Kitchen’s birth was registered under the name Norah Kitchen Hawkesby in 1878, in Leeds, her sister’s birth having similarly been registered as Minetta Kitchen Hawkesby in 1876, in Leeds

In 1903/04 and 1904/05 he played in the Woodhouse Cup for Leeds St Martin’s. In 1905/06 to 1911/12 he played in the Woodhouse for Leeds.
He played for Yorkshire against Lancashire on 28/01/1905.
Death
Ronald C O Thorp died in 1943, Nottingham. Norah Thorp died in 1962, in Leeds.
