|
Richard Slocombe was born in 1813/14, in Nether Stowey, a village at the foot of the Quantock Hills, ten miles west of Bridgewater, Somerset.
The 1841 census found him lodging at Brunswick Street, Leeds, and working as a bookseller.
White’s Directory of Leeds & the Clothing District, 1842, listed him living at 14 Upper Brunswick Street, Leeds.
In the first quarter of 1843, he got married back in Somerset, the marriage being registered at Bath. The couple had a son, Richard Hunter Slocombe, born 1843/44, at Leeds.
His wife appears to have died within eight years of their marriage, as she doesn’t make an appearance in the censuses.
The 1851 census found widower Richard Slocombe, a publisher and bookseller, living in lodgings with his son at 62 Springfield Place, Leeds.
The 1861 census found Richard Slocombe, a bookseller, now living on his own, at 8 Maddon Street, Hanover Square, London.
Death
Though not evident in the 1871 census, he was presumably still in London as his death on 16th October 1871 was registered at Holborn. Administration of his effects, which fell in the under-£100 category, was granted to his “son and only kin” Richard Hunter Slocombe of Stratford, Essex. Probate records describe Richard Slocombe as “late of Charterhouse in the City of London”.
Chess
Richard Slocombe attended the first meeting of the original Yorkshire Chess Association, in January 1841, but appears not to have attended ant subsequent such meeting.
