Non-Chess Life
Richard Reaney was far from honest when declaring his age for census purpose, or else he was simply unsure of his age. His ages as declared in censuses from 1861 to 1891 were 37, 40, 50 and 57 respectively. His recorded age at death was 76, putting his date of birth in the period 21/06/1824 to 20/06/1825. This agrees fairly closely with his age in the 1861 census, which puts his date of birth in the period 08/04/1823 to 07/04/1824. Private family history websites, which appear to draw on “inside” information, give his date of birth as in 1824, which is probably correct. It is noticeable that in the 1891 census his sister’s age was given as 75 as compared with his “57”.
The same websites give Richard Reaney’s parents as David Reaney (1792-1834) and either Sarah Reaney née Beckley or Sarah Evans Reaney née Bickley (1796-1831). “Bickley” seems the correct maiden name, as in son Phil(l)ip’s middle name. This means both Richard Reaney’s parents were dead by the time he was about 10 years of age, and he was probably raised after then by relatives, perhaps explain the difficulty in finding him in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, and might have led to some uncertainty in his own mind as to his age, though giving his age wrongly in censuses was probably merely to cover up the difference between his age and his wife’s age.
In 1858, Robert Reaney married Hester Todd (born 1835/36, Norwich), in Bradford, and the couple had at least the following seven children, all born in Bradford:
