Non-Chess Life

Michael Henry Rankin was born to Robert Rankin junior and Margaret Rankin on 04/01/1808 at Bristol, and was baptised on 14/05/1808 at Bristol.

At the age of 16, by an agreement dated 14/11/1826, he became an articled clerk to Robert Anthony Purvis of Newcastle-upon-Tyne for five years.

The 1836 Newcastle-upon-Tyne Poll Book listed Michael Henry Rankin giving “Chambers” in Pilgrim Street as his qualification to vote.

A relevant 1841 census is elusive, but chess records place him in Haifax.

Around 1849, or earlier, he got married to Anna, born1812/13, Wreay (which one?), Cumberland.  The couple had at least two children, both born in Halifax:

Sarah Isabella Rankin

born 1849/50

Henry F.(?) Rankin

born 1855/56

The 1851 census found Michael Henry Rankin, a solicitor, living with his wife Anna, 1-year-old Sarah Isabella Rankin and three servants, at 7 Harrison Road, Halifax.

The 1861 census found Michael and Anna living with 5-year-old Henry Rankin and two servants at 3 New Road, Halifax.  Also living with the Rankins was Michael’s father’s cousin, 89-year-old widowed Newcastel-born annuitant Elizabeth Storey.  Michael was now a solicitor and registrar of the County Court.  His place of birth, exceptionally, was given as Kingsdown, Glos.  The fate of Sarah Isabella Rankin in unclear.

The 1871 census found Michael, Anna, Anna’s niece 20-year-old unmarried Mary J. Gaskin, and two servants, living still at 3 New Road, Halifax.

The 1881 census Michael, Anna, Mary and two servants living at 5 New Road, Halifax, seemingly having moved house.

The 1891 census found Michael, Anna and Mary had moved to 33 High Street West, Dorchester, Dorset.  They now had only one servant.

Death

Probate records state that Michael Henry Rankin of 33 High Street West, Dorchester, died on 01/01/1892.

Probate was granted to his wife, Anna Rankin, and solicitor Arthur William Alexander, which suggests that Henry had died.  His effects totalled £1,765 5s. 2d.
