John Marsden was the eldest son of David Marsden (q.v.) and his first wife, Judith. He was born 1829/30 (probably 1830) at Thornhill, two miles south of Dewsbury, and seven miles east of Huddersfield.
He was still living with his parents in 1861, being described in the census of that year as a retired woollen manufacturer, though only 30 years of age.
In 1863, John Marsden married Elizabeth Shaw (born 01/06/1839, at Pontefract), daughter of Samuel Shaw, woollen draper, on 1st October 1863, at Pontefract’s parish church, St. Giles. John was described in the marriage register as a cotton spinner, so the retirement alluded to in 1861 had been cancelled, presumably in order to support a wife.
John and Elizabeth had at least three children, all born at Huddersfield:
The 1871 census found the parents and eldest two children living at Queen Street, Huddersfield. The 1881 census found the same four, along with third child John, and a London-born niece called Edith C. Marsden, living at “Beechwood”, Edgerton, Huddersfield. John had presumably returned to work to support his family, as he was described as a cotton spinner and J. P.
Death
John Marsden, son of David Marsden, died 9th(?) May 1887, aged 57, and was interred in the family grave. The inscription on the grave has deteriorated too much to read all the details. In particular, the biblical quotation (or whatever) is virtually unreadable, though doubtless recognisable to the informed. The main text appears to have read, as follows:
IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOHN MARSDEN SON OF THE LATE DAVID MARSDEN DIED MAY 9TH 1897 AGED 67 YEARS
Elizabeth Marsden, wife of John Marsden, died 27th Feb 1915, and was interred in the same grave as David and John. Whilst some letters have been lost, the inscription is decipherable: ALSO IN LOVING MEMORY OF ELIZABETH WIFE OF THE AFORESAID JOHN MARSDEN BORN JUNE 1ST 1839 DIED FEB 27TH 1915

Chess
John seems not to have been as prominent in Huddersfield chess as his father. He attended the chess club’s annual meeting in 1856, and the West Yorkshire Chess Association meeting of 1859.
