Peter Littlewood was one of four chess-playing Sheffield-born brothers.
Non-Chess Life
Michael Paul Littlewood was the sixth child and fourth son of Alfred Edward Littlewood and Ida Littlewood, née Wheeldon, who had eleven children in all. Where the family lived prior to 1937 is unclear, but from about that date they lived in a newly-built left-hand semi-detached council property, 222 Eastern Avenue, Sheffield. For more on the family background, his parents and siblings see The Littlewoods of Sheffield.)
Peter’s chess career was very short, and he was much-better known as a bridge-player. He conducted a bridge column in the Sheffield Star for about twenty years. He and wife Margaret had three children. Latterly he’d lived at Stoops Lane, Bessecar, Doncaster. The Yorkshire Contract Bridge Association seems now to run a “Peter Littlewood Seniors Pairs” competition. Sister Judy records that just before Peter died, he and his bridge partner had equalled the record for most wins in the British Bridge Pairs, and were hoping to beat it the next time.
Death
He fell off a stepladder while cleaning the garage at his home in Bessecar, and sustained injuries from which he died, aged 67, in the fourth quarter of 2001.
Chess
Peter played chess seriously for only a short time, but during that time won the Sheffield Championship in 1952.
