Identity of the Chess-Player
“J L Levin” played chess in Leeds before the Second World War (and possibly after). “J L Levin” got married in Leeds in 1940. Only one person appears in the 1939 Register answering to “J L Levin” and that is someone given the name “John J L Levin”, which one suspects may be the result of a misunderstanding on the part of the enumerator. (Reference to a Leeds directory of the period could resolve this matter.) These three sightings of a “J L Levin” or similar are here assumed all to be of the same person.
Non-Chess Life
The 1939 Register found the following, presumably siblings, living at 17 Amberley Terrace, Leeds:
The origins and the later fate of the four are largely difficult to trace.
Abraham died in Leeds in 1981. (The date of birth given at death matches that in the 1939 Register).
There was a Rachel Levin born in Leeds in 1903, but her family listed in 1911 included none of the above.
John L Levin married Maud Winterbirn at Leeds in 1940. None of the place of birth, the date or place of death of John are evident, nor is information on the death of Maud Levin, suggesting they may have emigrated.
Jennie seems to have married Fritz Scheidt in Leeds in 1946, but no death of a Jennie Scheidt is evident.
Chess
J L Levin played for the Leeds Woodhouse Cup team 1933-34, 1934-35 and 1935-36. He also played for Yorkshire in the 19/03/1934 Yorkshire v Lancashire friendly, and placed in the 21/03/1936 Yorkshire v Lancashire NCCU match.
Death
It is unclear when and where J L Levin died.
