Chess:
|
The chess-player
“C. H. Wallwork” was active in Manchester from 1897 or earlier,
playing in his first county against Yorkshire on 19/02/1898, and remaining
active through to at least 1912.
|
Note:
|
There were at least
four people in the Manchester area who on the face of it could have been
the chess-player:
1) Charles Henry
Wallwork, iron-founder of H. Wallwork & Co. (b. 1854/55, Oldham; d.
27/02/1936, Salford);
2) Charles Henry
Wallwork, french-polisher (b. 21/12/1871, Manchester; d. 20/10/1917,
Wallasey);
3) Charles
Herbert Wallwork (b. Chorlton); and
4) Charles Henry
Wallwork, mercantile clerk (b. 1875, Manchester; d. 06/11/1922, Sale).
Another Charles
Henry Wallwork died at or near birth at Salford in 1886.
Gaige’s
“Chess Personalia” (not checked) apparently gives the
chess-player’s date of birth as 31/03/1875, corresponding to no. 4
above, here assumed, therefore, to be the chess-player.
