Non-Chess Life

He was a director of Arthur Field, Sons & Co. Ltd. of Halifax.

Death

He died in 1985.

Chess

He learnt chess while at Silcoates School, Wakefield.  He first competed for the school chess championship, for which there was a silver cup, when 14 years old, and won.

Not long after leaving school he joined Halifax Chess Club, where he won its knock-out competition in the three successive years 1928, 1929 and 1930, and thereby won outright the silver cup presented to the winner.  However, he elected to return the cup for continued contest, accepting a replica in its stead.

He was secretary of Halifax Chess Club in 1929-30.

In 1930 he joined Bradford Chess Club, where in the same year he won the club championship with a score of eight out of nine (+8-0-1).  From joining the club he played for Bradford’s Woodhouse Cup team.

He was the losing finalist in the Yorkshire Championship of 1933-34.
