Non-Chess Life

The parents and siblings of Horatio Harriman are listed in the page for his older brother Frederic Fearnley Ayre.

At the time of the 1861 census, 25-year-old Horatio was living with his parents, sister Julia, brothers Algernon and Walter, and five servants, at Wellington Lane, Sculcoates, Hull.

In 1866 Horatio married Clara Jane Thorney in Hull.  The couple had at least the following three children, all born in Hull:

William Thorney Ayre

born 1869/70, Hull

Percy Thorney Ayre

born Aug/Sep 1870, Hull

Violet I. Ayre

born 1877/78, Withernsea

An 1868 Poll Book lists Horatio Harriman Ayre as resident at Pearson Park, a mile or so from the centre of Hull, along Beverley Road.

The 1871 census found Horatio and Clara living with the first two children and three servants at Pearson Park, Sculcoates.  Horatio was described as an oil cake merchant.

The 1881 census found Horatio and Clara living with just one servant but no children at Queen Street, Owthorne, a stone’s throw from where Horatio’s sister-in-law’s parents, the Fewsons, had lived in 1861.  Horatio was still an oil cake merchant.

Horatio is elusive in the 1891 census.

The 1901 census found Horatio and Clara living with Violet and Horatio’s sister-in-law, 69-year-old Jane E. Ayre (widow of Algernon or Walter?), at 17 Bannister Street, Withernsea, which was the next road towards the sea, parallel to Queen Street, so they hadn’t moved very far since 1881.  Horatio was described as a seed crusher and merchant.  It was perhaps the crushing of seeds which resulted in oil cakes.  Jane E. Ayre was living on her own means.

Death

Horatio Harriman Ayre of Withernsea died on 21/08/1905, aged 69.  The death was registered at Patrington.  Probate was granted to his widow, Clara Jane Ayre, and son William Thorney Ayre, who was described as a merchant.  He left effects of £7,937 18s 8d.

Chess

H. H. Ayre was one of those taken on by Edmund Thorold when he visited Hull in 1880.  Whether the “H. Ayre” also mentioned by the Bellman was H. H. Ayre is unclear.

H. H. Ayre played in the 1883 Yorkshire-Lancashire match, but on a lower board than brother F. F. Ayre.
