Non-Chess Life
At least two Sunderland-born people named “Thomas Clavering” are evident in the census returns, but one with “Clavering” in the middle seems elusive in the 1861 and 1871 censuses.
The 1881 census found “24”-year-old Sunderland-born “Thos. Clavering Alder” boarding with jet-ornament dealer William Cooper Dawson and his family, at 5 York Terrace, Whitby. Thomas was a draughtsman.
The marriage of Thomas Clavering Alder to Helen Fawcitt [sic – probably Fawcett] was registered in the fourth quarter of 1883, at Whitby. The couple went on to have two children, both born in Whitby:
The 1891 census found Thomas and Helen living with the two girls and a 12-year-old nursemaid, at 12 Grove Street, Whitby. Thomas was now described as a naval architect, meaning perhaps one who designed boats and /or ships.
The 1901 census found Thomas, Helen, Mildred, and Helen’s widowed mother, 77-year-old Newcastle-born Hannah Fawcett, but no servant, living at 32 Esk Terrace, Whitby. Thomas was still a naval architect. The 1911 census found Thomas, Helen and Mildred still living at 32 Esk Terrace, Whitby. Thomas had changed his occupation, describing himself as, by occupation, a “Painter (Artist)”. Mildred was a music teacher. He remained resident at Esk Terrace for a further twenty years.
