Non-Chess Life
The parents of Ernest Johnson Adams were George Adams (born 1851/52, London) and Emily Kate Adams (née Robinson, 1858, Hull), who married in 1877, in Hull, and had at least the following nine children:
The 1881 census found father George, a provision merchant, wife Emily, sons Ernest and George, and a servant living at 30 Windsor Street, Hull.
The 1891 census found father George had retired, despite being only 39 years old, and the family of two parents and first seven children had moved to Beverley. The four eldest children were scholars. Violet was recorded as being one day old. There were three servants.
The 1901 census found parents and nine children living with one servant at Woodcroft House, Westwood, Beverley. Father George was still retired. Ernest was now clerk to a provision merchant (his father’s former business perhaps). George appears to have been a lance corporal in “D. C. L. I.”
In1908, Ernest Johnson Adams married Winifred Izon Hirst, in Hull. Their first child was Eileen Mary Adams, born 1909/1910, in Hull. (They may have well gone on to have further children.) Winifred’s middle name gets variously misrepresented. Ernest clearly recorded his wife’s middle name as Izon. Probate records give it as “Mary”.
The 1911 census found the family of three living at 7 Heathcote Street, Newland, Hull.
By the time of his death in 1943, Ernest Johnson Adams was resident at Wandway, Thwaite Street, Cottingham, to the north of Hull.
Death
Ernest Johnson Adams died on 31/05/1943.
Chess
E. J. Adams was a regular player in Hull’s Woodhouse Cup team, usually on lower boards, from 1904-05 through to 1936-37 and possibly a couple of seasons later.
