What constitutes a chess club is not as clear as might seem.  Some clubs are formed, then lapse and fade away, and sometimes new clubs of the same name are born at a later date.  The start of a new club is more often reported than the decease of an existing one.  The following list includes some of what has come to the writer’s notice so far.  There were obviously a number of other Yorkshire clubs not yet listed.  Start and end dates are given where to hand, but sometimes the best that can be done is to give dates when a club was known to exist, without the start and/or end date being known.  Details of sources for the dates given will be in the articles on said clubs, when written and uploaded.  Some local associations are included.  Some widely-quoted early dates are difficult to substantiate.  Some clubs etc outside Yorkshire are included.

* These seven locations, along with Leeds, Doncaster, Wakefield, Halifax and Huddersfield, were described as having (or having recently had, in the case of York) chess circles or clubs, in an article describing chess in England, appearing in Le Palamède of 1842 (issue no. 7).
