The first association of chess clubs in Hull appears to have been formed in 1887.  It was formed from the following clubs:

Central Conservative Chess Club

De La Pole Chess Club

St. Augustine’s Chess Club

Salisbury Conservative Chess Club

United Liberal Chess Club

Western Liberal Chess Club

The founding officers were:

President

Edward Freeborough

Vice-Presidents

George Wright Farrow

Robert Harris Philip

Secretary & Treasurer

William Edward Trumble

The formation of the Association was reported in the January 1888 issue of the British Chess Magazine.

Among the initial actions of the new Hull Chess Association were the arrangement of a tournament among 32 selected top players in the Association, and the arrangement of a visit by Joseph Henry Blackburne to Hull in January 1888 (q.v.)  The idea of a chess column in a local newspaper was a longer-term project which was proposed.  Presumably, earlier such journalistic efforts by James Crake and then Edward Freeborough had fizzled out.
