Photograph supplied by, and reproduced by kind permission of, Thomas Young Stokoe’s great-grandson, Thomas Stokoe,

depicting James White playing chess against Thomas Young Stokoe,

taken in 1868, at Gateshead.

The two both lived in Gateshead or its vicinity at the time, but soon after both moved to Leeds.

Which is which player isn’t recorded, but given that one was a schoolmaster and one was a tailor,
one might suspect that the player with the wide lapels was the tailor, Thomas Young Stokoe.

Other photographs, of Stokoe on his own, feature the same broad lapels.
