The Woollard Family Grave at Keighley
The cemetery at Keighley, known as Utley Cemetery, is situated on sloping ground running down from Skipton Road into the Airedale valley. These days there is a bridge over the railway to a newer part. These days the cemetery offers a clear view across the valley to the Emley Moor radio and television transmitter on the far horizon.
The cemetery features numerous elaborate grave monuments set in well-kept grounds in which are a good number of mature trees, including many conifers.
The Woollard family grave is in plot C105 in the “C unconsecrated” section which is to the right of the short level path running from the bottom of the first set of steps reached when proceeding in a straight line from the main entrance. The plot is on the outer side of the loop of pathway through this small section.
There are two rows of grave plots, one immediately adjacent to the path and following the curve of the path as it loops round back to the straight path off which it turned, the second running behind the first for at least part of the way. Many of the graves, especially in the row immediately by the path, have lost whatever headstones or monuments they may originally have had, and this applies to the Woollard grave. Nevertheless, there is a war-grave headstone for George Frederick Woollard, and a single flat stone listing the other four occupants of the grave with years of birth and death. This latter stone dates from 1934, the latest date on it, or later.
