Graves in York cemetery of Sir James Meek Kt and his second wife Eleanor (right)

and of their youngest daughter Phoebe Margaret Meek (left),

which are inscribed as follows:

 

 

Sacred to the Memory of Eleanor the beloved Wife of Sir James Meek Knt

who Departed this life the 9th September 1874 in the 52nd year of her Age

 

Sacred to the Memory of Sir James Meek Knt

late of Middlethorpe Lodge near the City of York

who Departed this life the 10th January 1891 in the 76th year of his Age

 

 

In Loving Memory of Phoebe Margaret Meek

youngest daughter of Sir James & Lady Meek

Died May 26th 1938

 

 

The inscription on the large red granite plaque mounted on the front wall of the cemetery chapel, to the left of the door, is difficult to read, and defies photographic capture.  It runs as follows:

WHO DIED 7TH JANY 1940, AGED 21 YEARS.

PHEBE (ELDER DAUGHTER OF JAMES MEEK,

OF MIDDLETHORPE LODGE NEAR YORK, ESQUIRE,

AND WIFE OF ROBERT FARRAR)

WHO DIED 9TH DECR 1840, AGED 26 YEARS.

HANNAH MEEK (DAUGHTER OF ROBERT

AND PHOEBE FARRAR)

WHO DIED 20TH AUGUST 1840, AGED 1 MONTH.

MARGARET (YOUNGER DAUGHTER OF JAMES MEEK

AND WIFE OF WILLIAM DYSON)

WHO DIED 23RD AUGUST 1843, AGED 26 YEARS.

JAMES MEEK (SON OF WM AND MARGARET DYSON)

WHO DIED 27/03/1841 AGED 1 YEAR AND 8 MONTHS.

MARTHA MEEK (MOTHER OF JAMES MEEK

WHO DIED 17TH APRIL 1841, AGED 74 YEARS.

ROBERT LYTH MEEK (SON OF JAMES AND

ELEANOR MEEK DIED 31ST JULY 1854, AGED 15 WEEKS.

 

HER ALSO REST

THE REMAINS OF THE ABOVE NAMED

JAMES MEEK OF MIDDLETHORPE LODGE, ESQUIRE,

AND ANN HIS WIFE

AWAITING THE RESURRECTION UNTO ETERNAL LIFE.

THE FORMER PEACEFULLY CLOSED A LIFE OF

EMINENT USEFULNESS AND BENEVOLENCE

ON THE 13TH DECEMBER 1862, AGED 72 YEARS,

AND LAID THE FOUNDATION STONE OF THIS CHAPEL,

DURING HIS FIRST MAYORALTY

ALSO OF THE ABOVE ROBERT FARRAR

DIED 26TH JULY 1887, AGED 71 YEARS
