Played at the Maunche Hotel, Sheffield,
on Saturday, 01/12/1883,
over 19 boards, 2 games per board (time permitting).
That there were 19
boards suggests that 20 boards had been the intention, but that a last-minute
hitch had meant one or other side lacked a player.
This appears to be
the first match undertaken by the recently-formed Sheffield & District
Chess Association against another city or town. Most of the Manchester
team are recognisable as Lancashire county-team players.
Manchester’s board 4 was a brother of Sheffield’s board 6, and
the two had relatively recently both played for Penistone.
Sheffield held out
reasonably well over the top boards, but lacked strength in depth.
Two games were
played on most boards, but only one was managed on boards 9, 14 and 18.
The Sheffield
& Rotherham Independent of 08/12/1883 reported the results as

* One of these will have been S Scott (the stronger of the
two, so probably board 8).
As is so often the
case, it is not clear if the score “1-1” in some cases
represented two draws.
