Played at Leeds Chess Club’s rooms, at the Masonic Hall, 38 Great George Street, Leeds, on 21/07/1883, over 15 boards, 2 games per board (time permitting).
Fate had created an unexpected window of opportunity for little Ilkley to stand a chance of beating the mighty Leeds. George Edward Wainwright had by now presumably graduated from Oxford University, but he was still living with his widowed mother in Ilkley, though he would soon leave. Meanwhile Leeds player, Joshua Petty, had moved to Ilkley a couple of years earlier. With these two extra players, Ilkley had a surprisingly respectable team for such a relatively small town.
The Leeds Mercury of 19/01/1884 carried a belated report on this match which was won by Leeds by almost the slenderest of margins, as follows:
