1883: D. Y. Mills in Bradford |

An unusual hybrid event took place in Bradford on 08/12/1883. Former Leeds player David Yarnton Mills gave a 6-board blindfold simultaneous display, while a 13-board match between players aged under 35 years of age against players aged over 35, those players being drawn from a wide range of West Yorkshire clubs.
In the blindfold simultaneous display, D. Y. Mills won 4 games and lost 2; his opponents, and their results, were as follows:
This was reported in the Sheffield & Rotherham Independent of 22/12/1883, wherein D. Y. Mills was said to be from Bath, implying he had by then moved away from Leeds. At the end of the event, Mills was presented with a marble clock inscribed, “To D. Y. Mills, Esq., from the Bradford Chess Players, in remembrance of the 8th December, 1883.” In reply, Mills referred to the pleasure it gave him to meet his “old opponents and friends,” supporting the inference that he had by then moved away from Yorkshire.
