Edmund Thorold’s seemingly annual visit to Hull, to give a simultaneous display, was reported in The Westminster Papers of 01/02/1879.

The visit took place on 21/01/1879, at Hull Church Institute, and involved Edmund Thorold taking on 20 opponents simultaneously.

At the close of play, Thorold had won 12 games and lost 2, while 6 remained unfinished.

The Hull victors were G. W. Farrow (George Wright Farrow) and E. Pulsford (Edward Pulsford).

In the unfinished games, J. Parker (Joys Parker), of Grimsby, had a Knight against three passed pawns, Messrs. Harris and Rust were both the exchange up, and in the other three games Thorold “had a good attack.”

The event had been watched by a large number of onlookers.  “Mr. Dixon” (presumably H. Dixon) thanked Edmund Thorold.
