Played at Leeds Chess Club, Victoria Hotel, Great George Street, Leeds, on Monday, 13/12/1873 over 7 boards, 3 games per board (time permitting)
The Leeds Mercury of 18/12/1873, page 7, reported, “A fortnight ago the chess players of the Leeds Church Institute sent a challenge to the Leeds Chess Club to play a friendly match at chess, believing that play with strangers would greatly benefit them, and tend much to their improvement.”
Play started at 7.00 p.m. and concluded at 10 p.m. which implies an average of at most 30 minutes per player per game. The Mercury reported the results as follows, stating that there were no draws:
* lost by default
It would appear that Mr. Scholes was originally selected, but, in the event, was unable to play.
Sometimes, when a much stronger club played a friendly match with weaker club, the stronger club fielded a selection from its weaker players. (Larger clubs typically operated a system of grouping players by strength into Class A, Class B etc, for the purposes of internal competitions, so in this case a team of the Leeds Chess Club Class B players might have been more appropriate.)
The Institute players are difficult to identify, especially without initials. Where discernible, identities of players would appear to be as follows:
