1863: Saltaire v Baildon |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Played at Saltaire, on Friday, 30/01/1863, over 5 boards.
The Bradford Observer of 05/02/1863 reported the results of the players as follows:
At first glance it seems the players of each team were listed in board order and that the first-named Baildon player played 3 games against the first-named Saltaire player, and so on. That notion works fine for the top three boards, but it suggests only two games were played on board four, which is quite feasible, but also that 4 games were played on board five! Assuming, nevertheless, that the players were paired off in the sequence of the listing, then the match results were as follows:
As ever, with the particular method used for recording the results, “1-1” could mean a win a-piece (perhaps more likely), or two draws. Similarly “2-1” and “3-1” could involve two draws, or not.
The players are largely unrecognisable to the present writer. “Mtison” is presumably a typographical error. That “Mtison” and “Milton” are the only players given initials suggests that “Mtison” should read “Milton” rather than, say, “Mattison”. Some possible identities suggest themselves, as follows:
* Attended WYCA meeting of 1888, as a Bradford player. ** Attended the WYCA meeting of 1860, as “Alderman Mitchell” of Bradford.
